The Hungarian Athletics Association would like to welcome you to Budapest for the 2nd European Team Championships, 1st League.
Building on the success and the vast experience Hungary has gathered in the world of athletics, we are excited to welcome back some of the best athletes in Europe for what promises to be a stellar weekend of competition in the middle of June.
The venue itself is a living legend of European athletics, having hosted the 8th European Championships in 1966 as well as the 18th edition in 1998. Formerly known as the “Népstadion”, it was renamed in honour of the most famous Hungarian football player, Ferenc Puskás, whose name circled the globe many times.
The track will undergo a refurbishment before the 2010 European Team Championships and will offer the newest state of the art implements and equipment. In the past, a number of world and European records were broken in Népstadion, some of which are still standing today. A capacity crowd cheered on Steve Cram (GBR) to put his name in the history books once again in 1985, when he set the European 2000 metres record, (4:51.39) while just as many witnessed Christine Arron shatter the 100m mark by winning the European Championships in 10.73 seconds.
Although neither of them will line up on the track this June, we are confident that the best athletes of the 12 participating nations will live up to the expectations and produce some fine athletics and even greater results.
Once again welcome to Budapest, see you in June!
